Tugun Market Co has had one heck of a glow-up. A stalwart on the Gold Coast Highway, the iconic building has been supplying the local community with fresh fruit and veg for years. The evidence of her longevity, however, had begun to show and the old girl was in need of some TLC. Thankfully, the unusual building caught the eye of a seasoned supermarket owner who was inspired to give it a new lease on life. The vision was to create a destination where you can purchase fresh produce, pick up a cut of quality meat at the butcher, browse gourmet cheeses and health foods but also stock up on pantry staples, without having to go to multiple locations.
The entire building has been thoughtfully reimagined by Alexa Nice Design, which has now doubled in size to 850 sqm, and incorporates a cafe counter slinging Campos Coffee alongside an array of grab-and-go eats such as wraps and salads. If time is on your side, you can pull up a seat in the new outdoor area and let the little ones run around in the fenced-off grassy area. There’s even a dog bath at the far end for your furry mate. Inside, it’s a gourmands wonderland with everything from fresh flowers through to Cape Grim beef, Monday Distillery’s range of no-alc sips, primo produce and even a dedicated fromagerie – hellooo happiness! The gourmet grocer is a gastronomic one-stop-shop.
